Birds are regarded as good bioindicators but when we think about birds we rarely think about penguins. However, Antarctic penguins are crying out loud that there is a problem. Several penguin species are responding to environmental changes that are taking place in this region and are sending a warning message to the scientific community. Interestingly, the response of each penguin species is different but, again, the message is clear: human activity is negatively affecting even the most remote areas in the planet.
Andrés Barbosa has been studying bird populations for more than 25 years. Currently he is working on a study about the effects of global change on the populations of penguins in the Antarctica and the results he is obtaining should trigger some alarms. This investigator is currently the manager of the subarea of Polar Investigation of the Investigation State Agency of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the Spanish delegate in the Initiative of Migratory Birds in the Arctic.
