Big Years, Big Days, Bird Races, Bird Lists, they are all forms of competition around birds. In a Big Year, birders try to watch as many bird species as possible in a given area, which can be just your municipality, region, country or the whole world.
The Big Year is a Hollywood movie starring Owen Wilson, Steve Martin and Jack Black which depicts de frenzy of three birders to win a Big Year in the US. Plagued with real anecdotes -the movie is based on a book describing real facts-, references to existing birders and an acceptable level of correction in ornithological terms, The Big Year is an acclaimed film among bird lovers.
Jack Black, with his permanent loser style of most of his films, plays the role of Greg Miller, a real birder and not a loser at all but a very charismatic and passionate birder who was in a bad situation when he undertook his big year: he got divorced, had been unemployed for two years, spent 31.000$ on travel expenses for his big year, it took him six years to pay back his credit cards… but now he is a renowned bird guide who runs an imaginative big-year-for-all company.
The three birders compete intensely and some comic situations arie that don’t differ at all of what happens in real life to those who decide to run for a Big Year!
If you are curious about the most active side of birding, you just can’t miss out on the screening of the movie at the Museu de les Terres de l’Ebre in Amposta on Friday 23rd at 9:30 pm. Just come and see how passionate birders can be!
